The Moroccan license plate serves as a crucial identification mechanism for vehicles registered in Morocco. Each plate is structured to include five digits (ranging from 1 to 99,999) that denote the vehicle's registration number, an Arabic letter positioned centrally that increments in relation to the registration number, and an identifier indicating the prefecture that issued the plate, which ranges from 1 to 88.

The design of license plates in Morocco underwent a significant transformation at the beginning of the year 2000, marking the introduction of what is now referred to as the third "generation" of plates. This change was necessitated by the inadequacies and saturation of the previous system (####-##|#), where the last digit represented a whole region, thus primarily differentiating plates based on the eight regions defined by the administrative division.

The updated system integrates both letters (in Arabic) and numbers. The current format follows the structure ##### | A | ##, characterized by a white background with black lettering. Additionally, rear plates are designed to be slightly wider than their predecessors.

When a series of a particular letter is exhausted, the system transitions to the following letter in the Arabic alphabet. The final segment of the plate comprises one or two digits that represent not only regions but specifically highlight prefectures and provinces within the kingdom.

It is important to note that vehicles sold after January 1, 2000, automatically receive these new plates. The same requirement applies to vehicles changing ownership from that date onward, as well as those opting to switch to the new system.
